The Golden Globe Awards returned Tuesday with a show that felt almost like normal. Almost, that is, despite a year’s absence from television following the controversy that arose over the absence of Black voters among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which picks the movies, television series, and filmmakers the show honors.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” was the biggest winner in the film categories, picking up Golden Globes for best motion picture-comedy or musical, best actor for Colin Farrell, and best screenplay for writer-director Martin McDonagh.
Close behind was “The Fabelmans,” Steven Spielberg’s retelling of his early life story, which won best motion picture-drama and best director for Spielberg.
In the television categories, the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary” won big, taking home honors in the television comedy category for best television series, best actress for Quinta Brunson, who also created the show, and best supporting actor for Tyler James Williams.
The rest of the TV categories scattered Globes a bit here and bit there. “House of the Dragon,” the HBO prequel to “Game of Thrones,” was a slightly unexpected winner for best television drama. “The White Lotus” was a well-received winner in the best television series, anthology or movie, winning best series and best supporting actress for Jennifer Coolidge.
Host Jerrod Carmichael, the show’s first host, did not ignore the controversy that had enmeshed the Globes in 2021 and threatened to put the organization out of business or at least greatly diminished. His opening monologue took sharp aim at the race issue vis a vis the Globes and the HFPA.
But the stars were out in their finest, though perhaps a few more actors were not present to accept their awards, including best actress in a motion picture-drama Cate Blanchett for “Tár,” Kevin Costner, winner for best actor in a television drama, and Zendaya, winner for best actress in a television drama.
Still, the champagne flowed, as the awards were handed out.
