Canucks’ Michael DiPietro to make NHL debut vs. Sharks

Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro will make his NHL debut along with forward Zack MacEwen against the San Jose Sharks.

The team confirmed the news as DiPietro and MacEwen both took a couple of solo laps ahead of warmups.

According to the Canucks, Jakob Markstrom was originally scheduled to start but will not play as a result of tightness in his lower-body.

DiPietro was called up on an emergency basis back on Feb. 5 with backup goalie Thatcher Demko out with a lower-body injury. The 19-year-old has split his season between the 67’s and the Windsor Spitfires, posting an 18-10-1 record, a .908 save percentage and a 2.37 goals-against average.

The Windsor, Ont., native was selected in the third round (64th overall) by Vancouver in the 2017 NHL draft.

MacEwen was called up on Feb. 10 from AHL Utica with Sven Baertschi was ruled out indefinitely with post-concussion syndrome. The 22-year-old has 17 goals, 25 assists and 42 points in 49 games this season in the AHL.

In 66 games last season for Utica, the Charlottetown native had 10 goals, 23 assists and 33 points.
