‘Praying for the victims,’ hundreds gather outside Thousand Oaks hospital after 13 killed in mass shooting

Thousands Oaks residents gathered outside Los Robles Regional Medical Center Thursday morning as word spread of the victims from the night’s deadly shooting at a nearby bar.

One of those victims, Ventura County sheriff’s Deputy Ron Helus, was taken there. Helus was killed in the gunfire as well as 11 others.

“I needed to be here to show my respect.” said Lilly Rigg, who lives in Thousand Oaks near bar where the shooting occurred. Something like this “never happened so close to home. It’s such a tight community. So safe.”

Thirteen people are dead, including the gunman, after he opened fire on a crowd at the Borderline Bar and Grill, a country dance bar, in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday.

Hundreds lined up outside the hospital to honor the fallen deputy as a procession prepared to move his body.

Some of those gathered were also in attendance at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas where another mass shooting occurred in 2017.

Ten women huddled in prayer outside.

“Praying for the victims … for help … for our nation … for our world … for forgiveness,” said Ellen Rivera.

Many of those at the bar were young students from nearby colleges, as the bar held one of its weekly “college nights.”

Christina Duffy, a Thousand Oaks resident, said her sons are away at college or could’ve been in at the bar when the shooting took place. She fear she’ll know names of victims list.

“Those aren’t MY children, but they’re OUR children,” she said. There are many mothers gathered among the community member paying respects.

Josh Brice is one of those. There to honore Sgt. Helus and the other victims. His family of five moved from Redlands 4 years ago. “It’s such a quiet community. We never have any issues. That’s one of the reasons we moved here — it’s so safe,” he said.
