USU golf: Utah State finishes in second place at Southern Utah Invitational

Utah State’s golf team shot a final round 4-over 292 and finished in second place with a 2-under 574 (282-292) at the Southern Utah-hosted Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational held at the par-72, 6,781-yard Sunbrook Golf Club. In all, USU had three of the top-nine players in the field.

Utah Valley won the team championship with an 11-under 565 (281-284), while the Wolverines Aaron Yeates took medalist honors with an 8-under 136 (68-68).

Utah State sophomore Chase Lansford finished the tournament in third place for his best-ever tournament finish and his second-ever top-five placing. Lansford began the tournament by carding a career-low 8-under 64 during his opening round on Monday before shooting a 3-over 75 during his second round on Tuesday to finish with a 5-under 139 (64-75). Ironically, that 5-under 139 is tied for his lowest-ever 36-hole score, also doing so at last year’s Southern Utah Invitational as he carded rounds of 71 and 68.

Lansford now has five rounds in the 60s this year and seven in his career, as well as six rounds under par this season and 13 in his career. It is also his third under-par finish this season and the fifth of his career, not to mention his fourth top-20 finish this season and the seventh of his career. And finally, his opening-round 64 was the best round by an Aggie golfer since the fall of the 2014 season.

Utah State sophomore Hayden Eckert also had his best-ever tournament finish as he tied for fifth place at 1-under 143 (71-72) for his second finish under par this season and the third of his career. He now has three rounds under par this season and nine in his career, to go along with his third career top-10 finish, including his second this season, and his fifth career top-20 finish.

Utah State senior Braxton Miller tied for fifth place after carding a 3-under 69 during his final round to finish at 1-under 143 (74-69). For Miller, it is his fourth top-10 finish this season and the fifth of his career, to go along with his 11th career top-20 finish. Miller has now recorded four under-par finishes this season and six in his career. With his final-round 69, he now has six rounds in the 60s this season and 11 in his career, to go along with eight under-par rounds this season and 26 in his career.
