Utah Grizzlies win second straight in Wichita, 4-2

The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Wichita Thunder, 4-1, on Saturday night at INTRUST Bank Arena as they won their second straight on the weekend.

“Wichita came out hard and we weathered the storm,” said head coach and General Manager Tim Branham. “All around I thought it was a great effort from the boys.”

Utah goaltender Kevin Carr stopped 25-of-26 in the game as the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead 10:57 into the first period on a shorthanded goal and they never looked back.

“We had buy-in from everyone and the boys responded well against a good team; Wichita is a good team,” said Branham.

Chris Leibinger took a centering pass and scored from Ryan Olsen after Kyle Thomas blocked two shots on the penalty kill.

Utah went up 2-0 as Cliff Watson held a puck in and Brendan Harms got it to Ryan Misiak (eight) in front for a backhander 5:18 later to make it 2-0.

Wichita got on the scoreboard on its 11th shot 4:13 into the second period before Kyle Thomas (eight) scored shorthanded from Sam Windle at 10:42 as Wichita looked to tie on the power play.

Watson found Ryan Walters (14) in front to cap the scoring with 2:01 left in the second period as Jon Puskar added an assist.

The Grizzlies return home on Monday, Jan. 15, for their annual Maverik Monday Martin Luther King Day Matinee at 1:30 p.m., against the Rapid City Rush.
