Ron & Don: Jeff Glass’ story ‘does your heart good’

Every hockey season has its share of good-news stories. This year, Jeff Glass is one of them.

After plying his trade in the AHL and overseas, the 32-year-old goaltender finally made his NHL debut last month for the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s now had plenty of air time on Hockey Night in Canada, too.

“I watched him last night, I got all chills watching this guy last night,” Don Cherry said on Saturday night. “Playing in the minors all that time, can you imagine how he feels?”

Glass was part of Canada’s famous 2005 world junior squad, winning gold alongside players like Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Shea Weber, Dion Phaneuf, and Patrice Bergeron, to name a few.

But after failing to make the Ottawa Senators the following season, he left the AHL for the KHL, where he played seven seasons before returning to North America in 2016-17.

Now five games into his NHL career, Glass has a 3-1-1 record, a 3.01 goals against average and a save percentage of .918. He almost had his first shutout, had it not been for a Patrik Laine goal late in Friday’s win over the Winnipeg Jets.

“It was unbelievable, he won the game, should’ve had a shutout,” Cherry said. “But I’ll tell ya, it does your heart good.”
