U.S. beats Canada in a shootout in women’s U18 hockey semifinal

DMITROV, Russia – Canada will play for bronze at the 2018 under-18 women’s world hockey championship after losing a 4-3 shootout to the United States in Friday’s semifinals.

The Canadians let a 3-1 lead slip away in the third period and now will face host Russia for third on Saturday, while the Americans face Sweden for gold.

Sweden beat Russia 2-1 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Makenna Webster scored the winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout.

Casey O’Brien, on a power play, and Kelly Browne scored third-period goals to tie the game for the Americans. Canada did itself no favours with four minor penalties in the period.

Taylor Heise also scored for the U.S. while Lindsay Reed made 22 saves.
