Carrie Gracie has spoken of the moment she decided “enough was enough” and quit as the BBC’s China editor because she could not return to the country and “collude knowingly in what I considered to be unlawful pay discrimination”.

“I could not do it, nor could I stay silence and watch the BBC perpetuate a failing pay structure by discriminating against women,” Gracie told BBC Radio 4′s Woman’s Hour.

The journalist, who has worked for the broadcaster for over 30 years, resigned in an open letter blasting the broadcaster for having a “secretive and illegal pay culture” before doing two, carefully orchestrated interviews, on its leading radio shows.

The BBC found itself in the awkward position of trying to cover Gracie’s resignation, that was splashed across all the front pages of major newspapers on Monday, while following its own rules on impartiality, that prevent show hosts’ becoming its interview subjects.

BBC rules mean that Carrie Gracie can’t discuss Carrie Grace if Carrie Gracie is presenting the programme discussing Carrie Gracie. So she is sitting in silence while Mariella Frostrup talks about Carrie Gracie on the Today programme

Gracie first appeared on BBC Radio 4′s Today programme where she was presented with an opportunity by co-host John Humphrys to make a statement, after being served a soft question about reaction to her resignation, rather than being quizzed about what prompted it.
