Utah’s Matt Gay won the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation’s top college football placekicker, on Thursday night during the ESPN College Football Awards show.
It’s the first time a Utah player has won the award.
Gay leads the nation in field goals per game with 2.25, making 27 of 31 in his first year with the Utes program. His 87.1 field goal percentage is 11th in the country.
Gay was a finalist along with Auburn’s Daniel Carlson and Utah State’s Dominik Eberle.
